Why variety is good? And other questions creatives get

Did you know Sushant Singh Rajput was good at dancing, singing and even writing? Well, not a trap to sell my blog or a Bollywood junkie moment but he was awesome. Wasn't he?

On that note very random note (or is it?), let us explore some questions creatives get or wonder themselves about. I have myself thought about some of these or worst, someone I know asked me about it.

  1. Maybe I should stop doing.......because everyone is niching down.

A big NO. No individual is cut out just to do single stuff their entire life. If that was the case why would our schools have co-curricular or extra-curricular activities and even points or markings for them?

The people you think are niching down are probably just choosing a single palette for their design. I will explain what I mean. If you are an artist on Instagram, you might see many artists just posting certain things on their feed to make it look even or aesthetically pleasing. This doesn't mean they have stopped doing what you cannot see. I know many artists who are readers, many singers who dance and so on. So, you may choose an account to post single or multiple things as long as it speaks to you and your audience. Nobody wants robots, they are looking to connect with people who look and feel like humans with multiple facets. I can't tell you how relieved I am when I see a person doing multiple things. That is a quick ticket for me to start following them.

With that super long first point, let us move to the next.

2. Am I influencing my work with my emotions?

I have taken this one earlier as well. Your piece of art will always have your emotions imprinted in them. And, it is okay. You have found a healthy way of dealing with your emotion, what else do you need? Allow your words to flow and get your emotions playing the tune they should. Expressing your emotions not only change the way you process your feelings, to make a piece of art but emotions also alter the way you process other's work. This occurs both at intellectual and bodily levels subconsciously. Art is supposed to evoke emotions in your being. Art here signifies not just something you make on canvas but everything you create.

3. You are so gifted. How did you get this talent?

I have not heard any major artists say "I was born with this talent". That might be probably a case for 0.1 % of them but for the rest? It is hours of practice on the desk while the rest of the world is probably procrastinating. That is the only shortcut to success. Practice, look at your work, criticize with care, and then finally practice again. This might seem like a loophole if you do not enjoy the process. There are no other shortcuts I know, to get better.

4. Am I creative if I do not like my ideas?

I know this one is a bit tricky to answer. I have known people who could make a thousand dollar painting or portraits and yet they would be like, "I did not like that attempt of mine". This is absolutely fine as long as the work you dislike doesn't stop you from making further attempts at it. You do not have to like all your ideas and you even need not attempt all your thoughts but make sure the mind to paper ratio is at a good conversion rate.

5. How do I work when my life sucks?

Ok. Let me get this straight. If I waited for feelings to get better, half of this website would be empty. Not saying that happiness would not let you create, but all other emotions, including the emptiness, could. After all, a blank canvas is a lot of possibilities. And, so are your dark moments. DO NOT WAIT for your life to get better just to work on a project. Probably your life is waiting for you to get better at your project.

In conclusion for this blog post, all I want to emphasise for you is to make sure you create. Create the space in your life. Create the work you care about. Also, create the work you dislike, so you know next time what exactly not to look for.

Let me know if any of it was useful and let me also know if you have any mental blocks or perhaps even something that keeps you going!
